Assignment 4 Kaylyn Torkelson

This picture was taken March 1st, 1993 outside of a feeding center in Southern Sudan by a photographer named Kevin Carter. Famine had caused many Sudanese people to go without food, including this child who (outside of the frame of the shot) later died. In the background of the photo, you can see the vulture that is stalking the malnourished and emaciated child. Kevin received harsh criticism after not helping the child, even though he did receive awards for his photography in relation to the picture. He committed suicide in 1994 because he couldn't handle the horrifying images that he remembered from his time in Sudan.
This photograph shocked and outraged the world, as did the story of the photographer who took it. Many people didn't realize how harsh reality was in other countries, and this picture certainly opened their eyes and educated them about the problems that people face in third world countries. After viewing this photo, I see what needs to be changed in the world so that instances like this don't occur again. This photo changed the way a large community of people viewed the outside world, including myself.
