Assignment 2-Gibbs

  • How would your life have been different if you'd grown up 20 years earlier? How would you interact with others? Do you think your relationships then would differ from your present relationships? Which time period would you prefer and why?
Technology today is obviously one of the most influential elements in our world. We use it for the majority of the activities we participate in, such as school, work, art, communication, sports, etc. Literally almost anything you can think of has technology involved in it in some way. When we travel, a GPS instructs us on where to go, there are electric scoreboards in sports, and we use e. readers to read our books. However, most importantly to me, is the affect it has on the way we communicate. With social media, texting, and calling, we rarely are required to talk in person. Honestly you could stay inside your entire life and make money with an online job, get food delivered to you, and download movies and books to be entertained with. It's a little creepy in my opinion. And yet I still use these sites and my phone constantly. As a population, and personally, we are constantly in touch with everything going on in the world and it can be a little exhausting.
This present day experience and what it enables us to do is in stark contrast with 20 years ago. None of this would have been possible. Technology was not nearly as ingrained in our way of life, it wasn't as involved in sports, books, or communication. While it  may have been nice in some aspects, I prefer the way we live today. While it can sometimes be overwhelming, I love knowing what's going on in all corners of the world. I am addicted to current event's magazines and twitter accounts, but I love it. I don't view it as a bad thing.  I like being able to call or text my friends whenever I want to tell them something or get advice. This does not replace face-to-face contact by any means, but adds to it. We still need to communicate in person, but I don't think more communication is a detrimental in any way.
